A Love Letter to HMI
As I age out of HMI, I reflect on two transformative years of love, growth, and community, including celebrating Valentine’s Day in a space that taught me the true meaning of queerness and love.
Dear Hetrick Martin Institute,
These two years have been nothing short of life-changing. From the moment I stepped through those doors, I felt an immediate sense of belonging, and over time, you became more than just a place—I found my chosen family here.
The support and encouragement I’ve received from the incredible staff—mentors, peers, and friends—have been truly remarkable. Through both the brightest moments and the darkest, toughest times, you has been my unwavering support system. The staff has always been there for me, lifting me up when I felt down, and helping me keep pushing forward when it seemed impossible.
I’m especially grateful for the space you have provided for youth to truly be themselves. It’s a place where authenticity is celebrated, and where I was able to explore and understand what queerness looks like, both within myself and within the community. This has been an invaluable gift that I will carry with me always.
Every day you brought new lessons, new connections, and experiences that I’ll cherish for the rest of my life. I’ve grown in ways I never thought possible—pushed to step outside my comfort zone and inspired to chase dreams I didn’t even know I had.
I am beyond grateful for the love, kindness, and understanding that surrounded me at every turn. The memories I’ve made, the friendships I’ve formed, and the lessons I’ve learned will stay with me forever. You will always hold a special place in my heart, and I carry its impact with me as I move forward in life.
Thank you to everyone who made these two years so unforgettable. Your support, guidance, and belief in me mean the world.
With all my gratitude and love,
Ummaromana Sama
